rUNdead Charleston Zombie 5K returns October 25

You can register at RunDead5k.com ($48; $40 for Charleston County residents)

Here are more details from a release:

Presented by the Charleston County Park and Recreation Commission and On Purpose Adventures, the 3rd annual rUNdead Charleston 5K returns takes place on the winding trails of Wannamaker just before sunset. The 5K course takes runners through woods and clearings, over bridges, across creeks, along ponds, and of course, through a maze of blood-thirsty zombies.

Not only will runners race against the clock on rugged terrain, they will dodge the undead at this challenging and exciting 5K. Participants will receive a belt with three detachable flags. As runners make their way through the course, zombies will attempt to grab the flags. Runners who bring five canned goods for donation to the Lowcountry Food Bank will receive an extra health flag before the race, increasing their chance of "survival" to the end of the course.

Limited registration is also available to be a zombie on the race course! In addition to traditional slower-moving zombies, a new category this year is the addition of the "raging" zombie, a running, more active member of the undead. Runners are also encouraged to dress in costume. Runners and zombies are invited to visit the "zombie assimilation station" to receive undead makeovers prior to the race. Gates open at 2 p.m. and the race begins at 5 p.m.

Following the race will be the Aftermath post-race party, featuring live music, a costume contest with prizes, a movie screening, a youth area featuring zombie tag and other events, vendors, food, beverages, and an awards ceremony. Spectators (ages 12 and up) are encouraged to attend rUNdead for just $5, or by bringing 5 canned food items for donation to the Lowcountry Food Bank. Spectators ages 12 and under are free of charge with an adult chaperone. Runners ages 12-15 may compete in the race, but must be accompanied by an adult. Groups of 10 or more can save on race registration by holding their own food drives to benefit the Lowcountry Food Bank.

Race registration is available at www.rundead5K.com or by calling 843-795-4386 (through Friday, Oct. 24). Rates increase on Oct. 10, so interested participants are encouraged to register today.
