To people of a certain age, some phrases just jump right out. Like "Early Bird Special." It did for me.

Read more stories on this subject in our Spoleto topic page.Blues performers take the stage at Mad River Bar & Grill each day from 5-7 for an exciting musical treat as part of the Piccolo Spoleto Festival. Tickets are  $11 (cash at the door/an ATM is handy). The daily sets continue through June 9th.

Last Wednesday, award-winner Freddie Vanderford  was on harp and Brandon Turner on guitar as the crowd  enjoyed great music and a break from the Charleston sun and humidity. Last month Freddie was named the 2010 South Carolina Folk Heritage award recipient in a ceremony in Columbia.

Mad River is an excellent venue for musicians because the former chapel has a vaulted ceiling and wooden walls. The notes dance all around the room as the attentive staff quietly serves food and drinks. As the sun goes down, be sure to step out back to sample the new outdoor bar and patio.

The website has the schedule of upcoming performers. Give yourself a break and get an early start on some fine Blues and perhaps a cool and refreshing beverage.
