9th Annual Gullah-Geechee Rice Celebration coming in April

The Gullah culture is often overlooked by locals and tourists alike. The Gullah-Geechee Rice Celebration your chance to learn about Georgetown County's connection to African history.

There will be Gullah educational events such as cultural lectures; artisans such as sweet grass basket sewer, Vera Manigault; local hammock makers; boat, Mr. Willie De Reef: and quilt maker, Bunny Rodrigues with her Michelle Obama Family History Quilt and a CAAHO Quilt show; and folk artists. There will be merchants and Gullah food vendors will also be on hand.

These events will take place: Gullah Chit chat and entertainment at the Gullah Museum & Gullah O’oman Shop at the corner of Waverly Road and Petigru Dr. on  Friday April 22.  The Rice Celebration/Festival at Parkersville Park on Saturday April 23, and the Easter Sunday Gullah worship service at the St. John A M E Church on Sunday April 24th. 

Some students at Waccamaw Elementary School are also working on a special quilt and play for the event. The Georgetown Times tells us more about it.
