Avery acquires first-edition slave narrative, hosts special unveiling

On April 14th, the Avery Research Center will host an unveiling of their recently acquired 1860 first-edition copy of the pre-eminent slave narrative 'Running a Thousand Miles for Freedom.'

The Avery recently purchased the book, which tells the heroic and perilous escape story of William and Ellen Craft, from a rare book dealer for about $4,000. The Crafts' escape route took them through Savannah, Charleston, Washington, D.C., Philadelphia, Boston, and on to England.

The Post and Courier has more on the Craft's incredible story as well as additional information on the unveiling.
