Free lecture and exhibit with local artist Nathan Durfee

Charleston artist Nathan Durfee will give a free public lecture at 6:30 p.m.on Tuesday, March 6 in Bond Hall Room 165 at The Citadel.  An opening reception for the exhibition “Nathan Durfee: An Artist’s Journey,” on view in Capers Hall Lobby, will follow the lecture.

Known for the whimsical cast of surrealist characters he renders in patchwork paint strokes, Durfee has become a favorite of the local art scene with sold-out shows and critical acclaim.  In the lecture and exhibition, Durfee will share the path he has taken both in his artistic choices and in his own artistic career.

Selected from the artist’s personal sketchbooks and never before exhibited, the twelve pen-and-ink drawings offer a rare glimpse into the imaginative process and practice of a full-time painter.

“Sketches show the other side of what I do,” says Durfee.  “Paintings take time and refinement, but with sketchbooks it’s just the essence of an idea.”

A native of Vermont, Durfee graduated from Savannah College of Art and Design and has since contributed to various publications across the southeast in addition to designing album art, commercial promotional materials, children’s books, and zines. Named Best Visual Artist for 2010 and 2011 by the City Paper, Durfee is represented in Charlestonby Robert Lange Studiosand by LeMieux Galleries in New Orleans.

This lecture and exhibition are made possible through the support of the artist, Robert Lange Studios, The Citadel’s School of Humanities and Social Sciences, and the Brawley Fine Arts Fund.
