What do you get when you combine a 15,000 old books with a passion for literacy? Bookzilla.

Local artist Karl Beckwith Smith, will lead an attempt to set a new sculpture record by collecting and stacking more than 10,000 books into a towering art sculpture.

But they're looking for some help to pull in raising money for Charleston Volunteers for Literacy's tutoring program for students in high need, local elementary schools. They're looking for $5 pledges per book used.

Interested in one or either? Bring cash donations (and maybe a book) to the construction site at the Gaillard Auditorium from on October 4th, 5th, or 6th.

"For the moment, by creating a large sculpture using discarded and unwanted books I hope to draw attention to their endangered status," says Smith. "By doing so I hope draw attention to the commendable effort being made here in Charleston to make sure that all our young people have the opportunity and ability to read."

The statue is slated to be at the Gaillard Auditorium, at 77 Calhoun Street, until October 10th.
