Greetings, friends. Congratulations on making it to yet another Friday in the Lowcountry, now get ready to buckle your seat belts because this weekend will be taking you for a ride.
Friday is brimming with grand openings, comedy, sports and more. Two openings to take note of are the eye-opening and controversial photography exhibit in the Halsey Institute of Contemporary Art and the opening night of Pure Theatre's psychological thriller Yankee Tavern. In addition, local art celebrity Julio Cotto will have his new works featured at Scoop Studios this evening. If you're still on the College of Charleston campus after checking out the exhibit at the Halsey, mosey over to the Carolina First Arena at 7 p.m. for a men's basketball game versus Wofford. The Charleston Comedy Festival is in high gear until Saturday, so check out a show, or two, or three, before the finale on Saturday evening. To quell your live music fix, jazz artist Quentin Baxter is joining the Charleston Symphony Orchestra for an evening of dynamic sounds from Max Roach to Thelonuis Monk tonight at Memminger Auditorium.
Now it's time for a little taste of what's good on Saturday. There is no better time than now to help out our brothers and sisters in Haiti, and you can do so at the Haiti Relief Benefit at Triangle Char & Bar from 2 to 5 p.m. Pearlz Oyster Bar and Al Di La are in cahoots for this relief effort as well. There are some solid sporting events to attend today, making the choice of which to attend is the hard part. The Citadel will be remembering Regan Truesdale, a two-time Southern Conference player of the year and The Citadel's all-time leading scorer, with a jersey honoring ceremony during halftime of the Bulldogs' home game against Furman. Out in North Charleston, the South Carolina Stingrays are holding their annual “Pack the House Night” and offering fans $5 tickets in an effort to sell out their game against the Reading Royals.
The stars will be out at the Hippodrome on Sunday for the premier of the soon to be released romantic drama Dear John. Actors Channing Tatum and Amanda Seyfried will be on hand, so come out and rub elbows with these two hot youngins. Looking for something a little more frisky for your Sunday? Head over to The Recovery Room and check out burlesque troupe, the Red Hot Rebelettes and a slew of bands that will be kicking it all night long.
