Events take stand against community crime

Update August 6: Lots of write-ups popped up about the Night Out, all were very similar (take your pick 1, 2, 3, or 4). All said more or less the same thing: People came together and vowed to take a strong stance against crime, the police want to help.

Original post: On Tuesday (August 5) cities across the country are participating in the National Night Out Against Crime. The event seeks to rally communities to come together to take a stand against crime and drugs.

Some 63 areas are registered to participate in South Carolina, and 11 in the area, according to the group's registrations.

Gathering points are scheduled across the metro area. If you don't see one in your area, call your local police department, there might be one nearby that wasn't well-publicized. Here are the locations mentioned in press releases:

Downtown Peninsula:
Mall Park on Columbus St. The Phillip Simmons Basketball League and East Side Neighborhoods will be celebrating at this location, including some free refreshments, and a visit by McGruff the Crime Dog.
At the Food Lion lot at 1015 King St., the North Central Neighborhood Association and Food Lion will be hosting an event for their neighborhood and surrounding areas. This event will feature a jump-castle and Child Fingerprinting, free refreshments and food, a McGruff visit, the Fire Department, and more!
The small street of Radcliffe Place will be closed for a Neighborhood Picnic for their Crime Watch neighborhood.
James Island:
A celebration will be held at Plymouth Park in Riverland Terrace for neighborhoods on the northern end of James Island and surrounding communities. This event hosted by the Charleston Police Department and the James Island Fire Department will feature free food and refreshments, the JIFD Smoke-house for the kids, Police Officers, and Police Officers.
Aat Westchester Playground a celebration will be held by the Charleston Police and Recreation for Westchester and surrounding communities on the southern end of James Island. Free food and drinks, a Fire Engine, and Police Officers. A walk through area streets is scheduled for 7pm.
West Ashley:
Lenevar Park will be a celebration for Lenenvar, Heathwood Olde-Towne, and surrounding neighborhoods in the Northbridge area. This event hosted by Charleston Police and the Recreation Dept. will feature free food and drinks, child fingerprinting, a Fire Engine, and a walk through neighborhood streets at 7pm!
Moreland Subdivision is planning a Neighborhood Picnic at Godfrey Park for their Crime Watch Neighborhood.
Johns Island:
The Summertrees neighborhood will be getting together for a Flashlight Walk at 7pm. They will meet at the park in their neighborhood.
Forrest Hills:
Residents will meet at 6 p.m. at Foxwood Drive and Dorchester Road, then march through the neighborhood with banners and hand held signs accompanied by police and fire vehicles, McGruff the Crime Dog and others.
Cameron Terrace, Oak Preserve, Charleston Farms, and Liberty Hill:
Residents will host a cookout at the School of the Arts field beginning at 6 p.m.
Wando Woods:
Residents will participate in a community flashlight walk from 6:30 until 8:30 p.m.
Dorchester Waylyn:
Neighborhood Association will host a cookout at the Jeanne Batten Community Center beginning at 6:00 p.m. Residents will also discuss children and community safety. The event will take place at the Activity Center, 3800 Spruill Avenue.
Chicora-Cherokee:
Residents will participate in a CPAD march throughout the neighborhood beginning at 6:00 p.m.
Horizon Village:
Residents will take part in a neighborhood walk and cookout. Back to School activities will also take place.

This is the event's 25th anniversary.
