Folly Beach residents Dr. Dilan Ellegala and volunteer director Doyle Word are being honored by the city in a ceremony next month for their work in east Africa that has helped improve surgical procedures in that part of the world.
Ellegala's foundation, Madaktari Africa, sets it sights on developing first-class medical care in a third-world setting. The Post and Courier has a post on Ellegala's work published just over a month ago that reports on a trip where he trained medical paraprofessionals at a clinic in rural Africa to perform neurosurgery.
The "Hometown Hero" awards event begins at 7 p.m. on September 9th on the second floor of the Holiday Inn/Tides Hotel, and will include presentations to Ellegala and Word, a slide show, and a talk about the work of Madaktari Africa.
For more on Ellegala and Word, hop over to article in The Post and Courier.
It is very happy to know that Two Folly Beach residents have received Hometown Hero awards for work in Africa. They really deserve this award and i appreciate them for doing such a great work. Keep sharing more and more news like this. Macallan 12
