With Rick Perry out, the field of GOP candidates is down to four, and a much more competitive atmosphere emerged at the CNN Southern Republican Debate in North Charleston last night.

Leading the charge was a fiery Newt Gingrich who had just been endorsed by Perry, who attacked the media as much as he tried to tear down Mitt Romney and Rick Santorum.

In the most recent polls ahead of South Carolina's Saturday primary, Gingrich still lagged 10% points behind Romney, 23% to 33%.

For more coverage, I'll point you to The New York Times' report, and for a blow-by-blow CNN has a live-blog report of the debate along with embedded video clips. The network also has their own standard report.

Politico offers up six takeaways from the debate that hep cement the view of Gingrich as a tenacious contender.

The Post and Courier also has a report, but it's most notable for the list of local candidate appearances around town today at the footer.

Meanwhile, Gingrich’s ex-wife, Marianne Gingrich, tore into her ex-husband candidate in a TV interviews.

And don't forget that Stephen Colbert and Herman Cain are holding a joint rally today at the College of Charleston.
