The Pee Dee Safe Kids Coalition is scheduled to have their quarterly car seat safety check on Tuesday, August 28, 2012 from 3 to 6 p.m. in the Kohl's parking lot off 544.

South Carolina has some of the least restrictive laws in the country when it comes to child safety seat requirements.  You can have a look at them here.  Those recommended by the American Association of Pediatrics are quite different.

• Rear-facing car seats for kids until at least age 2, or when the child exceeds the maximum height and weight recommended by the car seat manufacturer
• Forward-facing car seats with a five-point harness for kids over 2, until the child reaches the seat’s maximum weight and height
• Booster seats until an adult seat belt fits properly, typically when the child reaches 57 inches in height (4 ft., 9 in.), between 8 and 12 years of age
• Back seat riding with seat belt until age 13

At the car seat safety check, trained staff will determine if the seat you're using is the appropriate size for your child, fits into your car properly, and is accurately installed.  They have informational materials for distribution and will provide car seats, on a limited availability basis, to those who do not have them or have seats that are damaged or otherwise unusable.
