Former Governor Dick Riley and former slave and U.S. Rep. Robert Smalls will be inducted into the South Carolina Hall of Fame on February 9 in Myrtle Beach.

Apart from serving as governor from 1979 to 1987, Riley also served as U.S. Education Secretary under President Clinton.

Born in Beaufort in 1839, Smalls led the takeover of a Confederate steamship at the start of the Civil War and became a captain in the U.S. Navy. Smalls later served as a U.S. Representative from South Carolina in the 1870s.
