Few things are better than a springtime golf game in Charleston – except maybe a golf game tied to a good cause.

Commonwealth Cares Foundation is hosting the fifth annual Commonwealth Cares Classic on May 15 at the Ralston Creek Course at the Daniel Island Club. Proceeds from the event benefit Palmetto Medical Initiative, a an organization committed to providing sustainable, quality health care to those in need while increasing accessibility to global medical missions.

PMI has provided medical treatment to more than 28,000 men, women and children in Uganda through its Masindi Kitara Medical Center. PMI is currently working on a labor and delivery unit to help women and babies in Uganda.

Commonwealth Cares Foundation is the charitable arm of Commonwealth Financial Group, Daniel Island-based financial services firm. Owner Britt Gilbert formed the Foundation in 2007 as a way to give back to the community and have an impact.

Last year Gilbert spent two weeks in Uganda volunteering with PMI and he has another volunteer mission trip planned this year.

The Commonwealth Cares Classic begins at 11 a.m. with registration, buffet lunch and open driving range. Shotgun start is at 12:30 p.m. Golfers are invited to stay for scoring and cocktails at 5:30 p.m. Registration is $300 per person or $1,200 for a four-person team. Teams registering by April 1 can sign up for a discounted rate of $1,000.
