CARTA providing free service to veterans

The Charleston Area Regional Transportation Authority (CARTA) will be showing their appreciation to the military and its veterans Monday, November 12.

For the observation of Veterans Day, which falls on Sunday this year, CARTA will provide free rides for any veteran of the US armed forces or active duty member on the following Monday.

“We have a great amount of active military and veterans that are already regular riders on the CARTA lines,” said Christine Wilkinson, CARTA Interim Executive Director. “Offering free rides will not only be a great way to thank our regular passengers but offer the entire military community alternate transportation at no cost.”

Veterans and active duty members may use CARTA’s regular fixed route system, and the premium services such as CARTA Express and Route 402.

Passengers will need to present proper identification in order to obtain a free ride.  Examples of acceptable identification forms include: United States Uniformed Service ID card, Veterans Administration card, and/or American Legion or VFW membership cards.

CARTA would also like to recognize the more than 40 staff and driver veterans that help serve our community every day.  We would like to recognize Roland Chaffee, Melvin Aiken, William Allen, Sam Ancrum, John Boone, Bob Brown, Johnnie Buncum, Harry Burnell, Shannon Byrum,  Paul Chaconas, John Dupree, Harold Eady, Leon Florence, Martin Grant, William Hagan, Karen Hardwick, Lawrence Harris, Herman Jefferson, Leroy Jenkins, Sharon Keith, Chris Lair, Bernard Mack, DeAriesha Mack, Maurice Manigault, Simon Mathews, Terry Mason, Andrew McKelvey, Herman Middleton, Frederick Mills, Fard Muhammad, David Mungin, Gerald Rascoe, Bobby Riggins, Leon Smalls, Leroy Smalls, Herman Smith, Orestes Verge, Arthur Wilder, Robert Wilkinson, and Clint Young.  Thank you for all you have given and the service you continue to provide our community!
