Don't be alarmed if you see a a 40-ton right whale with a white knob on her head cruising along the South Carolina coast in the upcoming months -- tis the migration season.

This knobby headed whale has gained a slew of fans as well as acquired the name Palmetto, due to her white knob resembling the South Carolina state tree.

If you catch a glimpse of Palmetto, consider yourself lucky. Fewer than 400 of these critically endangered whales are known to exist, so let's hope that this year's breeding season proves to be as successful as the last.

The Post and Courier has the story.
