BBQ On The Waccamaw
Spring time is here and for many that means firing up the grill. For a select few that grill is rather large and they take things seriously.
Conway, South Carolina looks at capitalizing on that for a great cause. The "BBQ On The Waccamaw" BBQ competition benefits Waccamaw Sertoma , whom provides assistance with hearing health issues and educating the public on the issues surrounding hearing health.
As an additional community building opportunity the BBQ On The Waccamaw committee along with the Waccamaw Sertoma organization worked with Horry-Georgetown Technical College Digital Arts department to produce this year’s poster. This year’s competition poster was designed by HGTC Digital Arts design student Amanda Tolen. Tolen states "I wanted to develop a poster that reflected the essence of the BBQ culture while representing the colorful backdrop of the Waccamaw river." The BBQ On The Waccamaw poster will be on display in various locations in and throughout Conway. (For more info about Amanda Tolen check out her online portfolio.)
The “BBQ On The Waccamaw” cook-off will take place on May 13-14, 2011on the riverfront in downtown South Carolina. They are still taking application for those who think they have the chops and the "Q" to compete for the title of best BBQ in Conway. The “BBQ On The Waccamaw” will be judged by the South Carolina BBQ Association. Teams typically set-up and start their cooking process anywhere from 14-16 hours before turn in. Each team has to turn in a thoughtfully prepared "BOX" of their best BBQ at an appointed time. The "BOX" is then judged blindly by a group of certified BBQ judges. The criteria for judging is basted off of appearance, aroma, texture and taste. Scores are calculated and results announced, crowing a winner for the best BBQ in Conway.
From 11am - 3pm on Saturday, May 14 the public is invited to enjoy all of the flavors presented at the competition. Wristbands will be on sale for $10 for adults and $5 for children under the age of 12. All proceeds will go to benefit the Sertoma organization.
The BBQ On The Waccamaw competition runs in conjunction with the Bluegrass On The Waccamaw festival.
