Jazz Artists of Charleston presents
Charleston Jazz Orchestra
Latin Night: Monk, No Chaser: The Latin Side of Thelonious Monk
Charleston’s resident big band continues its seventh season, returning this fall with the Charleston Jazz Orchestra’s much-anticipated Latin Night on Saturday, September 19. Music Director and Conductor, Maestro Charlton Singleton, will lead the Charleston Jazz Orchestra in an inventive program, combining the unique, improvisational style of jazz legend Thelonious Monk with the Afro-Latin rhythmic touches of Latin Jazz. With MONK, NO CHASER: The Latin Side of Thelonious Monk, the Charleston Jazz Orchestra will explore a variety of Latin jazz styles, premiering spicier arrangements from members of the Charleston jazz community of Monk’s most notable contributions to the standard jazz repertoire, including “’Round Midnight” (Arr. Jack Pettit), “Ruby, My Dear” (Arr. Robert Lewis), “Straight, No Chaser” (Arr. Charlton Singleton), “In Walked Bud” (Arr. Jon Phillips), and more.
