Crowdfunding hits Charleston as February 1 marks the origination of FundingCharleston.com, a new local website with the purpose of connecting Charleston-area entities with the necessary funding to find success.

With over 452 currently active crowdfunding platforms around the world, FundingCharleston.com will be a continuation of the already successful concept that has brought accolades to sites such as KickStarter.com and GoFundMe.com

Business owners and others can use the site to register projects that need financial backing. After a fundrasing objective is set, project sponsors reach out to their existing clientele and social networks for benefaction. Projects can stay active on the site for as many as 90 days. At the end of the predetermined time period, FundingCharleston.com retains 10 percent of the money raised, which is similar to the 5 percent plus 3-5 percent credit card processing fee KickStarter.com charges.

A variety of projects are already seeking donations on the site. For example, London Cut Cigars is looking to raise funding for mass-production of customized cigar tubes, while third-graders at the Mt. Zion Elementary School are hoping to go on a class trip to the zoo.
