A new development plan for downtown Charleston's Union Pier Terminal was announced yesterday during a public meeting in which developers explained their desire to "restore Charleston's historical front door."

The major components of the plan includes demolishing most of the buildings on the property and opening up around 50 acres of waterfront land for public use and redevelopment. More changes to the current layout of the terminal include moving BMW's local port operations and shifting cruise ship passengers from terminal near the end of Market Street to an existing cargo building at the pier's north end.

The Post and Courier has a solid article recounting yesterday's meeting as well as a map outlining Union Pier's redevelopments. Hop over and take a look.
