The Charleston Metro Chamber of Commerce is reaching out to the Charleston City Council, board members, top investors in the chamber, and others in an effort to promote and and support the plans to redevelop downtown's Union Pier property.

The idea is to educate the business community on the $37 million economic impact that the cruise ship industry brings to the area in order to get support to build a brand new cruise terminal that would be pleasing to the eye as well as better manage traffic in downtown Charleston.

The reason for supporting the cruise business and the Union Pier plan is the broad economic contribution of both the port and the cruise industry to Charleston,” the chamber said in a statement released yesterday. “Thirty-three percent of cruise visitor are coming to Charleston for one to two nights ahead of embarkation and staying in area hotels, dining out and visiting attractions. More importantly, an estimated 40% of visitors are coming to Charleston for the first time.

First impressions mean a lot, and the Chamber hopes to make a lasting one with the Union Pier redesign.
