Post and Courier lays off 23 from across newspaper staff

According to an announcement on The Post and Courier's Web site, the company has cut "23 positions throughout the building, including seven that were unfilled."

Back in February the paper cut 25, six of which came from the newsroom.

It appears this round of layoffs is not centered on the newsroom but that some positions were eliminated. More telling is perhaps how a good portion of the layoffs were focused on unfilled positions that had already been lost through attrition.

In an odd occurrence, both layoff announcements were preceded by significant Web site difficulties

There's a grander story emerging here in how the decline of traditional publications is following and leading the rise of more independent publications.
