SmartCard parking meters installed downtown

The city of Charleston has recently spent roughly $70,000 replacing old parking meters with "SmartCard meters" that also accept the traditional coin method.

These SmartCards can be purchased at the city's Department of Revenue Collections, and they work similar to a debit or gift card given that the buyer can put as little as $5 or as much as $300 on the card as an alternative meter payment method.

Only about half of the city's 1,800 meters have been changed, but city officials say that by next year all of the meters should be SmartCard ready.
