P&C: Reform prison system to take pressure off early release plans

Much like most every other state program in South Carolina, the Department of Corrections is ailing from a lack of funding and the Legislature is trying to figure out a fix. Talk of reducing costs by simply letting some folks out earlier has emerged, and -- as you might guess -- many folks think that's a horrible idea.

In an editorial in today's Post and Courier, the paper puts its weight behind an effort to reduce crime and reform sentencing, and says it is something that should have been done long ago.

What's perhaps most striking is what appears to be a pattern by the Legislature to be unable to treat issues like these with much foresight and instead appears to be simply reactionary.
