Early Thursday morning, a Mount Pleasant police officer was involved in a shooting of a man in the Park West subdivision.
Officers arrived at the scene after receiving a call that Alexander S. Rogers, 24, who suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder, was wielding a pistol and pacing outside. Officers found Rogers in the driveway, gripping a black object which he repeatedly pointed at the officers while saying they'd have to shoot him.
Disregarding the orders to drop the weapon, Patrolman First Class William Decker shot Rogers in the shoulder. It turns out that it wasn't a handgun he was holding, but a box cutter.
Decker has been put on paid administrative leave while SLED investigates the shooting, and Rogers has been treated for his injuries and released to the Charleston County Detention Center where pending a bond hearing.
