"I Voted" but not many of you did...
Update June 21, 2012: "Let's get ready to rumble!"
The trial for the Democratic Primary starts today, supporters of Democratic candidate Preston Brittan have filed a suit claiming that votes for 7th District drop-out, Ted Vick should be counted and then Primary day winner and SC Election certified Democrat Gloria Tinubu wouldn't have the 50%+1 of the votes that is required.
Head on over to the Sun News for a detailed write-up of today's happenings, and hop on over to WPDE News for their take on the situation. You can watch WPDE's broadcast above.
For all the back story, read on below.
That's great, right? Well, maybe not. The Election Commission didn't count the 2,300 votes that were cast for disgraced candidate Ted Vick but there has been a lawsuit filed in Horry County that would force them to do just that. If the Vick votes are counted, Tinubu's percentage drops below the, "50% plus one" necessary to clinch the nomination."
A Brittain spokesman sent WACH the following statement:
"It is disappointing that the State Election Commission determined that more than 2,300 voters have been told that their vote does not count against the recommendation from the State Attorney General. We believe that the court will ultimately decide that the votes cast will be counted. Preston looks forward for a swift resolution of this matter for the benefit of all affected by the SC Election Commission decision."
Read an in-depth write-up about the issue over at MidlandsConnect.com and hop over to WMBF News for their broadcast.
We'll keep you posted as the drama unfolds.
Update June 14, 2012: Perhaps we spoke too soon. The Sun News is reporting that there may be a Democratic runoff on June 26, 2012, as well.
South Carolina Democratic Party chairman Dick Harpootlian says that the State Ethics Commission miscounted the votes.
Head on over to the source for the full story.
First report: With all the media attention surrounding the goings on in recent South Carolina politics, only 10% of registered voters statewide bothered to show up. And the hotly talked about, controversial, and, at times, tiresome 'Race for the 7th' ain't over yet.
Democrats have their candidate. Gloria Bromell Tinubu of Georgetown who is a Coastal Carolina University economist won the democratic nom by taking 16, 370 votes giving her 54.44% of the total votes. Her closest competitor was Myrtle Beach's Preston Brittain with 12,300 votes giving him a total percentage of 39.40%.
The Republicans for the 7th is a whole other story. Eight candidates remained on the ballot and only four of them broke double digits in percentage of votes. In the end former Lt. Governor Andre Bauer pulled in 12,002 votes and Horry County Council Chairman Tom Rice with 10,235 (32.07% and 27.35% respectfully) will face-off in a June 26th runoff.
Head on over to SCnow.com for more info.
The June 26th runoff might not be the end of the drama surrounding this upcoming November election. Operation: Lost Vote in conjunction with the kicked off candidates aim to get enough signatures to have their name(s) appear on the ballot come Tuesday, November 6. The grassroots activists were petitioning and protesting outside the recent Republican debate and were out in droves yesterday at polling places trying to get signatures. All these expunged former candidates have until noon on July 16th to, "collect signatures from at least 5 percent of registered voters in the counties, cities or districts that they are running to represent"
Make sure to head to The Sun News to read their full write-up on yesterday's signature drive.
