A dozen* South Carolina lawmakers left the state of South Carolina with a bill of more than $10,000 for the stay and attendance of the 2011 National Speakers Conference at theĀ Charleston Place hotel, where hotel rooms can often cost $500 a night.
It's a situation that's casting light on South Carolina's rules on gifts and how political gatherings are often underwritten by tax payer dollars.
*That's nine Republicans and three Democrats, a pretty even representation by South Carolina standards.
