Legislature debating vetoes, new bills

The Legislature has reconvened to look at possibly overriding 20 of Governor Mark Sanford's vetoes, they will also consider 10 bills still in committees. The Legislature has three days to debate the issues.

Keep up with our veto-related coverage on our veto topic page. The vetoed bills that could become law deal with fire sprinklers in buildings, notification of students with HIV, sales tax holidays on guns and energy-efficient appliances; and bills in committee that would add some accused child abusers to the Central Registry of Child Abuse and Neglect, another that allows some prisoners to access DNA evidence to prove their innocence, and a bill that would make it a felony for school employees to have sexual relationships with students.

In order for a veto to be overridden, and become law, two-thirds of the House and Senate must approve the override.
