State Supreme Court hears charter school dispute

The Charleston County School District and the state met with the State Supreme Court justices yesterday for a hearing concerning the constitutionality of Act 189, a special piece of legislation on charter schools that applies only to district.

The law under fire prohibits the school district from denying a charter school anything that is otherwise available to a public school.

If ruled constitutional, charter schools would receive public school treatment and get millions of dollars more annually. If ruled invalid, the school board would resume total control over how to allot funds to the district's charters.

It likely will be several months before a ruling is reached.

The Post and Courier has a play by play of yesterday's hearing; read it here.
