On again, off again: Ben Sawyer Bridge closure to finally happen (update: done!)

Update February 21: And the bridge got stuck.

Update February 19: The bridge has been replaced and is open to traffic (as is the waterway.)

Update February 6: Well, can you believe that. The bridge closing has been pushed back until Sunday, February 7.

First post: After being pushed back from November, to December, to January, and finally to February, the bridge that connects Mount Pleasant to Sullivan's Island closed on Thursday, February 4.

Within 10 days the span and Intracoastal Waterway will reopen, but to a brand new $30 million bridge span. The Post and Courier was there for the arrival of the bridge span pre-built on the old Navy Base.

The write-up includes a photo of the bridge and good details about what it took to get the span and what will happen next; read it here.

You can keep up with the progress of the bridge on S.C. DOT's special Web page and our Ben Sawyer bridge topic page.
