SCDOT announces preferred plan for I-526 construction

After talks of light rail transit and various alternatives leading up to today's announcement, the South Carolina Department of Transportation has decided that the extension of I-526 from West Ashley to Johns and James islands will be a low-speed, four-lane parkway, and will include a path for bicycles and pedestrians.

The speed limits on the new parkway will range between 35 and 45 miles per hour to make for "a quieter, more appropriately scaled road."

Not all are in favor of the new plan however. For those who want to voice their opinion, there will be public hearings on both August 31st and September 2nd at Burke High School. Times have not been posted for either meeting at this point.

Head over to The Post and Courier for more on the new I-526 design.
