School Board changes its tune on student transfer options

The Charleston County school board has done a complete 180 in how they plan to handle and accept school transfer requests.

The school board has decided to amend a policy that would have both kids and parents jumping through hoops to gain approval on transfer requests. Instead of keeping kids trapped in schools that they don't enjoy, a new proposal will allow students to transfer schools freely.

Some worry the option might create under-populated and racially segregated schools, while others believe that the open transfer policy works as an incentive to improve poor performing neighborhood schools.

The Post and Courier has more on the proposal; read it here.
