Update October 23, 2012: Construction has shut down the portion of 3rd Avenue between Ocean Boulevard and Kings Highway.

WMBF reports that it will remain closed until March of 2013, open back up for the tourist season and go back under major construction after it's over, until April 2014.

First report: Widening and the associated infrastructure with 3rd Avenue in Myrtle Beach are planned to begin on Monday, September 17, 2012 but won't be completed until 2015.

According to WPDE,

The project includes adding a third lane from US 501 to Withers Swash, then improving the two-lane section from Withers Swash to Kings Highway.

The project is intended to alleviate congestion, though the three years until its completion may add to it with lane closures and general work zone accessories.

The improvements will include bike lanes and sidewalks to enhance safety for those non-drivers traveling on that route.  According to this WBTW story, business owners on 3rd Avenue are also hopeful this project will yield benefits for them.
