Lazo's on Folly Beach serves up some phenomenally fresh breakfast fare

During a weekend staycation on Folly Beach, I had the opportunity to try out Lazo's, the breakfast and lunch spot that took over the space that was once Center Street Kitchen.

As a downtown resident, it had been a while since I'd been out to Folly for dining purposes, and I must say, I was pleasantly surprised. Opened in the beginning of February by Mike Kirages, owner of the Folly Beach staple Snapper Jack's, Lazo's offers up some of the freshest food on Center Street. A statement proudly placed on the front of their menu reads: "We proudly serve a variety of South Carolina, farm fresh, and free range products. We strive to use organic, fair trade, pesticide free or all-natural products whenever possible. Lazo's: (pronounced Lah-zo's) A fresh start on Folly Beach."

Rolling in with a bit of a hangover on Saturday morning, I had some serious grubbing out to do. I started off with a cup of fresh, fair-trade coffee and my friend and I split a piece of the quiche of the day. The ham and cheddar quiche was thick, fluffy, flavorful and for lack of a better word, phenomenal. No salt or pepper required to dress up this dish.

Next up was the Crab Cake Benedict ($10). Out came a enormous plate with a beautifully meaty crab cake topped with a poached egg cooked to perfection, all covered in a Hollandiase sauce. The centerpiece of the plate was surrounded with a generous portion of Lazo's breakfast potatoes that are by far the best I've had in quite some time. As a native Marylander, I have a soft spot for anything with Old Bay seasoning, and the breakfast potatoes had a subtle coating of the magical seasoning mix. The thought of dipping these potatoes in ketchup didn't even cross my mind. I splurged on a side of bacon (3 pieces for $2.75). The thick cut, crispy morsels were cooked to perfection.

My partner in crime for the weekend opted for the Common Omelet ($8) which packs in bacon, ham, mushrooms, onions, peppers, tomato and cheddar. All of Lazo's omelets are prepared with two free-range organic eggs, filled with fresh local ingredients and served with Normandy Farms Sourdough cinnamon toast and fruit. The omelet was tasty, but paled in comparison to the Crab Cake Benedict. The bowl of fruit and cinnamon toast were both fresh and delicious, a very nice touch.

The wait staff was friendly and attentive, my coffee was never more than half empty and our food arrived at the table promptly. The Lazo's experience was a wonderful way to start my Saturday on Folly, and it may very well be my new Sunday brunch spot. They start cooking up sandwiches for lunch once 11 a.m. rolls around, but I'm sticking with the all day breakfast option.

Lazo's is located at 11 Center Street and is open seasonally Wednesday - Sunday from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.
