Even Charleston's gardens are layered in history

It's a phrase that you wouldn't normally think: "Charleston's historical house gardens." But the South Carolina Historic Landscape Initiative wants us to think about that before owners of older homes go digging to spruce up their yards.

In one instance, a home at 14 Legare Street was able to restore an intricate 19th century garden by examining what was beneath the soil.

But even if you're not restoring the past, the group hopes you can at least photograph or sketch out what is there now.
