When the Charleston Light was new
Image by Coast Guard The Charleston Light on Sullivan's Island at its opening in 1962, at the time it was one of the most powerful in the Western hemisphere ( the light was later dimmed,) one of world's tallest, and the first in U.S. equipped with elevator. -- The National Park Service will hold an open house at the light on May 1.
