Controversy returns to Marion Square farmers market as veteran vendors ousted

Image by Flickr user martin.jessica Who doesn't love the mini donuts at the farmers' market? Well, they're out as of 2012.

Every year the increasingly well known Charleston Farmers Market announces which new and returning vendors will be at the Marion Square market when it opens in April.

It shouldn't be shocking for you to learn that not everyone who wants to sell at the market is allowed to. Instead potential vendors must score enough "points" to land a spot at the market — it's not popular with would-be merchants and it's particularly discouraging to veteran vendors.

This year the debates is back in spotlight as the Charleston Cup coffee stand and mini-doughnut making Coco's Donuts are ousted.

The Post and Courier caught wind and has a profile on the process, the criteria, and who all scores; take a read here.

This year the market will run Saturdays from April 7 to December 23.
