Largest ship to ever dock in S.C. has reached Charleston (updated)

First reporting: The largest cargo ship to ever dock in South Carolina, The Mediterranean Shipping Co.'s MSC Rita, has arrived in Charleston.

Check out the brief at The State.

Update February 26: The Post and Courier has followed with a lengthier story that notes the importance of dredging the Charleston Harbor of mud so that it can accommodate such large ships.

Read that story here.

The mention of dredging is of double interest as the government agency responsible for doing that, the Army Corps of Engineers, has had to put off some of its dredging responsibilities in other key water lanes (like S.C.'s stretch of the Intracoastal Waterway) due to a lack of funding.

Most recently this issue reared up when the State Ports Authority noted its Georgetown port had to turn away business due to a rising sea floor.
