Dubbed "non-denominational and dedicated to the historic Christian faith" a new license plate is available at the S.C. DMV, a private group has succeeded where a state-backed effort failed.

In 2008, the S.C. Legislature OK'd a similar "I Believe" license plate with a cross atop a stained glass window, however it was later struck down in court as violating separation of church and state.

And then in August 2010, then S.C. Attorney General Henry McMaster said that the new and similar plate designed by a private non-public group was legal.

That plate has been available since January and The Post and Courier writes that nearly 60 have been bought to date.

The "www.IBelieveSC.net" plate is available for a biennial fee of $25 plus the regular registration fee of $24.00. Proceeds from the sale of this plate are used to support faith-based educational and religious programs.

The tags have joined more than 130 speciality plates available in South Carolina, and some 370 total tags when you include special plates for legislators, military, and other organizational members.
