New proposal aims to put DHEC directly under governor's authority (updated x2)

Well folks, it looks like there has been a change of plans.

The State reports that a five-member Senate panel has voted to create a Cabinet secretary position to run the Department of Health and Environmental Control. This strategic move would put the secretary directly under the governor's authority.

The State reports that a Senate panel all but scrapped a plan to put the governor in charge of South Carolina's controversial environmental and health agency.

 


First reporting:

A Senate subcommittee will be discussing the possibility of dissolving the Department of Health and Environmental Control's part-time, seven-member board.

The Department has come under scrutiny after a series of agency missteps that have rubbed many in both the state government and general public the wrong way. The proposed plan to be discussed by the subcommittee today is the option of putting the governor directly in charge.
