Fire Breaks Out off of 501

Bringing back memories from the Wild Fires that burned along Highway 31 two years ago, today saw another, smaller fire burning near the same area.

Six to seven acres of wooden area burned Saturday afternoon west of Highway 31 in Myrtle Beach.

Horry County Fire Rescue assisted the Forestry Commission to put the blaze out near the road and kept it from jumping the highway. Murrells Inlet/Garden City Fire and Rescue and Conway City Fire Departmentassisted the county.

Public Information Director Scott Hawkins with the South Carolina Forestry Commission said the fire began from a flare up of a previous burn that happened Friday. He said that fire started by a spark from equipment on South Carolina Department of Transportation property. Hawkins said Friday’s burn was contained by nightfall.
