MB's Boys and Girls Club continues to be a crucial part of children's lives

To enable all young people, especially those who need us most, to reach their full potential as productive, caring, responsible citizens.

The Boys and Girls Clubs of America tracks its beginnings all the way back to 1860 in Hartford, Connecticut by three women: Mary and Alice Goodwin and Elizabeth Hammersley. This program started out as an initiative to get young boys off the streets and to receive a positive alternative. In 1956, The Boys Club of America received a U.S. Congressional Charter while celebrating its 50 years of existence. In 1990, the name of  the organization was then changed to the Boys and Girls Club of America in order to show that girls were apart of the cause just as much as the boys.

The Myrtle Beach branch of the Boys and Girls Club originated in 1996 after a small group of driven and thoughtful persons bonded together for good of the community. These same people formed a board of directors that took the proper steps in founding the first Boys and Girls Club in Myrtle Beach. It then became commissioned as a member of the Boys and Girls Club of America in 1998.

The Boys and Girls Club is a movement that offers care and development to children that may not receive it from home. The club here on the Grand Strand offers plenty of programs and services to drive these young children and to develop in them great life skills.

A major goal that was accomplished this year for the Boys and Girls Club of Myrtle Beach was the opening of the Teen Center located on 1404 Carver Street here in Myrtle Beach. This center was created in helping middle school teens accomplish their goals. The Teen Center provides sources such as computers and different academic activities to give the teens a positive tool that helps with school. There is no fee; however, the kids do perform community service projects to help build leadership skills.

This Friday, The Boys and Girls Club of Myrtle Beach will host The Worldwide Day of Play. This is the club's field day full of games, crafts, and fun. The time of the event is from 4:00pm to 6:00pm. You can volunteer here if you are interested. On December 4, 2012, The Boys and Girls Club will also host Champions for Youth, a dinner which will let the children get a chance to meet some of the local athletes and former champions from the area. The keynote speaker will be Amber Campbell, a Coastal Carolina University alumni, who also competed in the 2012 Olympics. This event begins at 5:30pm at Ocean Lakes Campground located in Surfside Beach, SC. Athletes from Coastal Carolina University will be serving and also talking to the children about leadership and teamwork.

With any non-profit organization, there will always be a need for help. The Boys and Girls Club accepts any financial donations, school supplies, and books to help accommodate the children of this club. If you are interested in helping, click here to start making a difference in a child's life.
