Hello, neighbors. It’s hard to believe October is coming to a close. That means the spookiest of all holidays is almost here.
That’s right, Monday is Halloween. And in case you were wondering, Horry County, Conway and the city of Myrtle Beach are all recognizing Monday as the day for trick-or-treating. So be sure to leave your porch lights on that evening if you want the ghosts & goblins to ring your doorbells on their yearly quest for mischief, candy and cavities.
The Walkers Woods POA asks that trick-or-treating be done between the hours of 5-8pm. Here are a few safety tips, courtesy of the city of Myrtle Beach:
- Have a responsible adult accompany children
- Only visit homes with porch lights on
- Wear reflective material on costumes
- Use a flashlight to see and be seen
- If possible, wear makeup instead of a mask to improve vision
- Make costumes short enough to avoid tripping hazards
- Inspect your children’s candy before they eat it
- As always, be aware of your surroundings
I want to thank Walkers Woods resident Colleen Mills, chairperson of Families in the Forest, for her hard work helping to organize the tree planting and litter cleanup Saturday at the Carolina Forest Ballfields. The turnout was a huge success. I didn’t hear an official count, but I’m sure it was 100 or more. We were all thrilled to see so many people volunteer their time on a Saturday morning to benefit the community.
Special thanks to the Carolina Forest NJROTC, the Lions Club, the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts of America, students from Ocean Bay Elementary, Ocean Bay Middle and the Academy for Arts, Science and Technology, Grand Strand Provisions, Horry County Parks & Recreation and Keep Horry County Beautiful for helping the Carolina Forest Civic Association make this event possible. CFCA board member Diana Lawler said the purpose of this event was to give the kids a sense of ownership in their community, and that’s exactly what was accomplished Saturday.
There’s nothing more rewarding than working with kids. The enthusiasm and excitement we saw when they were planting the trees was the same as my wife, Monica, and I watched when we chaperoned our son’s kindergarten class to Ripley’s Aquarium last week.
The Civic Association wants to create more opportunities for kids to be involved in their community, to have that sense of ownership. Families in the Forest will play a large part in this. Congratulations to Carolina Forest High for their 27-11 win over Sumter last week. The Civic Association is serving the first of two pre-game dinners for the team this Friday, October 28, before the Panthers take the field against Monica’s alma mater, West Florence.
Preparation will begin at the school at 3:00pm. Dinner will be served promptly at 4:00, and the team will have 30 minutes to eat. This will be a major undertaking as approximately 100 players, cheerleaders and coaches will be eating. The food will be donated by Civic Association business members. Volunteers are needed to help serve.
Walkers Woods’ property manager, Lucy Parker, asked me to mention that our new community specialist is Patty Krupsky. If you have occasion to call Waccamaw Management, please remember to extend a warm welcome to Patty.
