South Carolina has $15 million in down payment assistance and low-interest loans available for first-time house buyers who are law enforcement, EMS workers, law enforcements, nurses, and/or military veterans.

This program, dubbed the "Palmetto Heroes" program, has been around for two years; however, this is the first year that vets have been included.

Eligible home buyers can get down payment assistance of up to $5,000 as well as a fixed interest rate of 4.625% on a mortgage through the S.C. State Housing Finance and Development Authority's Home Buyer Program.
