Roper St. Francis Volunteers Win Governor’s Awards
The system and its hospitals recognized for quality and value

CHARLESTON, S.C. (May 17, 2013) – A pair of Roper St. Francis volunteers with a combined 1,500 full days-worth of service in the health system have been honored with statewide awards.

The S.C. Association for Volunteer Administration and the S.C. Governor’s Office hosted the 2013 S.C. Governor’s Volunteer Awards at the statehouse on Thursday, May 16. Gov. Nikki Haley was on hand to act as presenter.

Beth Saulisbury, who has logged more than 28,000 hours at Roper Hospital, was honored with the Legacy Award, which requires volunteers have at least 15 years of continual services with one agency.

“Beth is a wonderful example of what Roper St. Francis volunteers do for the hospitals, and they’re a true asset to the wider community,” said RSF Director of Volunteers Joan Perry.

Charles and Marlene Williamon received the Family Award. Charles Williamon has volunteered more than 8,000 hours at Bon Secours St. Francis Hospital in West Ashley. Both the Williamons support multiple other organizations in the Lowcountry.

“We are grateful that Marlene has been volunteering with the American Red Cross for almost 10 years through the Retired & Senior Volunteer Program,” said Louise Welch Williams, regional chief executive officer, American Red Cross, Palmetto S.C. Region.  “Marlene and Charles are a remarkable couple who work hard to better our community.”

The volunteer awards are presented annually in recognition of those who provide exceptional service in their communities. Forty nominations in eight categories were reviewed.
