Share Our Suzy Honors Breast Cancer Patient's Legacy With 10th Anniversary Memorial Day Party on May 24

Suzy McGrane’s breast cancer diagnosis did not stop her drive to help others rocked by the illness that would eventually claim her short life. Friends continue to honor McGrane’s memory every year during the Share Our Suzy (SOS) Memorial Day Weekend Party.

This year, the SOS “fun-raiser” will be held at the Mount Pleasant Memorial Waterfront Park (at the foot of the Ravenel Bridge) on Saturday, May 24 at 6 p.m. This marks the event’s 10th anniversary, and it will feature two bands, food, friends and a healthy dose of hope for breast cancer survivors and patients. All proceeds raised stay in South Carolina – helping individuals managing the crushing expenses associated with breast cancer diagnosis and treatment.

When Suzy was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1996, at the age of 28 she could scarcely imagine her long-term impact on others. When her cancer originally went into remission, she helped other breast cancer patients by hosting fundraisers to assist with utility bills, medical bills and childcare. Suzy’s cancer would eventually take her life in 2005, but her legacy lives on.

The first SOS event was held when Suzy was in treatment, and the tradition continued after her death as friends honored her memory with volunteer-led fundraising events. To date, SOS has raised over $200,000 – and all support goes directly to patients and patient services. The charity works with Roper Hospital’s breast health navigator – and directly with patients - to help fund day-to-day expenses that are unmet by health insurance.

Indecision and Five Way Friday will headline the evening (find Waterfront Park at 99 Harry M. Hallman Jr. Blvd. Mount Pleasant, SC), and tickets include food from Home Team BBQ and adult beverages. Tickets are $35 in advance and $50 the day of, and can be purchased online at etix.com or by calling 800.514.ETIX (3849). One hundred percent of the net proceeds from the event will directly benefit breast cancer patients in South Carolina.

About Share Our Suzy:

Originally called Save Our Suzy, this volunteer-led organization is now known as Share Our Suzy (SOS). The goal is to allow patients to focus solely on recovery and not the financial stress brought on by this difficult battle. Imagine fighting cancer while also struggling to meet your mortgage, pay your bills or forgo seeing extended family. The foundation has picked up where Suzy left off and works to aid patients with bridging the financial gap from diagnosis to remission. Funds raised are used to provide assistance to those with every day needs such as wigs, prosthetics, childcare, gas cards, utility bill assistance, medication assistance and more. We help cover the critical areas that insurance companies do not. For more information, visit: http://www.shareoursuzy.org or call 843.410.7970.
