On Sunday night, the Citadel's McAlister Fieldhouse was buzzing with energy and excitement for the Lowcountry HighRollers final roller derby bout of the season.

Read more stories on this subject in our roller derby topic page.The fans came out adorning hot pink and black in support of the team - a special super fan section even boasted some male fans in pink skirts and wigs. The crowd ranged from infants to elderly, and everyone was ready to see a battle.

And what a battle it was.

The Lowcountry HighRollers and the Little City Rollergirls of Johnsons City, Tennesses were so evenly matched that the game was a nail-biter from the first minute. The Rollergirls took an early lead, but the HighRollers refused to end the first half behind. A power play with no time left on the clock saw the HighRollers off to the locker room up one point.

Half-time entertainment included a set from the band Steve Hit Mike and a kiddie free-for-all ensued on the rink. There was also a roller skating troupe who infused break dancing and some boy band styled choreography into a five minute routine.

Fans and derby girls were amped for the second half, and both teams came out blazing. The HighRollers held onto the lead for the majority of the second half until the Rollergirls took charge and turned the tables. The Rollergirls racked up a 10 point lead with less than a minute of play left. With time running out, the HighRollers sent in team captain and jammer supreme, Red Dread. Despite scoring after the clock ran out, the HighRollers fell to the Rollergirls 96-102.

The Lowcountry HighRollers will surely be missed until the kickoff of their 2010 season.
