Gamecocks take rough tumble at Vanderbilt

The Gamecocks had a rough night at Vanderbilt, losing 24-17 before 36,850 in Nashville on Thursday. It's the second time in a row that USC has lost to the traditionally poor-performing Commodores.

But No. 24 USC almost had a chance to tie towards the end, but ultimately couldn't make it happen. The State says:
When Smelley went down for a 2-yard loss on third down, Spurrier elected to punt on fourth-and-18 from the USC 42-yard line, giving the Commodores possession at their 5 with 2:34 remaining.

After the defense forced a quick punt the previous series, Spurrier said he was hoping it would stop the run and give the Gamecocks one final shot.

Head over to The State for a write-up and photos, and you can get game statistics at USC' site.

With Clemson's devastating loss last week, it's been a rough patch for Carolina football. Hopefully Clemson can keep things together in Saturday's game against The Citadel.
