Today, August 11th, Pat Conroy's latest book, South of Broad, hit the streets and so far the reaction has been a bit mixed. The book appears to be rather good, only it's not living up to Conroy's legendary reputation.

in the words of Chirs Bohjalian, "Hurricane Hugo might not have dumped quite as much water on the city as Conroy's characters."

Ouch.

I'll point you to Scott Martelle's review at the Los Angeles Times to get a feel for the book.

And if you have some interest in the man behind the book, The Post and Courier has a lengthy interview with Conroy.

Update, August 12: The Charleston City Paper has added their own interview with Conroy.
