Charleston school employees required to take four-day furloughs

In an effort to compensate for $13.3 million in mid-year budget cuts, the Charleston County School District has approved a mandatory four-day furlough for all employees.

Read more stories on this subject in our schools topic page.The move is expected to reclaim some $600,000, and the time will be taken during spring break on April 3, 6, 7, and 8.

The approval came with little debate on the same day the district voted to close five area schools.

Update January 27, 10 p.m.: Looks like the school district is also cutting back on the use of substitute teachers.
