Today the U.S. Supreme Court vacated a lower court's ruling that the President can indefinitely detain legal U.S. residents without charge.
The court was scheduled to hear the case next moth, and a ruling then would have affirmed or denied the practice of indefinite detention. The dismissal of the case instead leaves the issue grey.
Why am I writing about this?
Because for the last five-and-a-half years Ali Al-Marri has been detained without charges at Charleston's Naval brig. -- He was the only person on U.S. soil that this case applied to.
The Supreme Court decided to vacate the ruling on the request of the Obama administration who has said they will be moving al-Marri to the federal court system.
With all the cards lined up, it seems only a short time until al-Marri will leave the Naval brig.
